digital & data leaders May 8, 2019 | New York City, USA
Yesterday in Tokyo, CDO Club and Summit CEO David Mathison was honored to join Sansan Chief Executive Officer Chika Terada in an intimate fireside chat on Digital Transformation (DX) and Customer Experience (CX).
The opening session kicked off day 2 of the Sansan Innovation Project’s annual conference, which included over 100 speakers and more that 5,000 delegates.
It was hosted at the Tokyo Prince Park Hotel on Thursday and Friday, March 14-15, 2019.
They discussed DX and CX leaders around the world, including ex-Starbucks CDO (and current J. Crew President and Chief Experience Officer) Adam Brotman, and former UK Government Digital Service (GDS) Executive Director Mike Bracken, among others.
Mathison explained that Starbucks, J. Crew, and UK GDS’s successes in digital transformation were in large part based on a foundation of big data, and leveraging that data to deliver outstanding customer experience.
Both of those companies and the UK government’s successes are based on a zealous, relentless, and obsessive focus on the customer.
Mathison, who has been visiting Japan since 1984, closed his session on a hopeful note: in the physical world, the Japanese treat customers as if they are the most important people on earth.
He argues that if the Japanese can extend this outstanding customer experience from the physical to the digital world, Japan will become a leader in digital transformation and customer experience.

Mathison then joined a panel moderated by Sansan Director of Digital Strategy, Makoto Kakizaki.
Other Panelists included:
Argo Kangro: Counselor of Embassy of the Republic of Estonia
Ayako Ozawa: Director of Publitech Association / Singer-songwriter / Human Resources Department at IBM Japan, Ltd.
Tetsuya Shibazaki: Counselor, Cabinet Secretariat of IT Strategy Office at Cabinet Secretariat
Panelists discussed the importance of governments taking a human-centric approach to cyberspace by delivering apps, websites, and portals that embrace all citizens and not just those that are deemed ‘profitable’ by corporations.
Government digital initiatives must be as diverse and inclusive as possible to embrace all ages, races, genders, cultures, and language differences, and those with physical challenges such as lack of mobility, sight, and hearing.
The most important news of the day was related by Shibazaki-san, who said that the government of Japan had announced 72 new laws that very day, designed to extend online government digital service and protect its citizens and consumers in cyberspace.

Also at the conference was CDO Club Japan founder Jun Kamo, who has curated three consecutive annual CDO Summits in Japan.
When he started CDO Club Japan just three years ago, there were only a handful of CDOs in the country. Today there are more than 70 Chief Digital and Data Officers here.
Kamo-san has recognized some of these leaders by naming three “CDO of the Year” award winners including Kazuo Iwano of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation; Koichi Narasaki at Sompo Holdings, Inc.; and Tsuguhide Nagase, former Chief Digital Officer at L’Oréal Japan.
Jun will convene the next Japan CDO Summit, the “D20“, in Fukuoka, Japan on June 4-5, 2019. The event will coincide with the first-ever G20 summit to be held in Osaka, Japan, and will focus on improving both corporate and government digital services in Japan.
David Mathison, Sansan CEO Chika Terada, Nobel CDO Magnus Gylje, CDO Club Japan CEO Jun Kamo
In one of the day’s most pleasant surprises, we were delighted to be joined at the event by Magnus Gylje, the Chief Digital Officer and Editor-in-Chief at Nobel Media AB from Stockholm Sweden.
Gylje was in Japan at an event for Nobel in Yokohama, and stopped by the conference after seeing Mathison’s posts about the Sansan event in Tokyo on Facebook.
It is indeed a small world – especially for globe trotting CDOs!
Gylje has spoken at two NYC CDO summits, and hopes to also attend the 7th annual NYC CDO Summit at Columbia University on May 8, 2019.
Among many other things, we discussed the Nobel Peace Prize nomination of Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old Swedish woman who self-generated the “School Strike For The Climate” with students in more than 190 countries striking for global action on climate change on that very day, Friday March 15, 2019.
Greta has spoken about climate change at the UN and DAVOS, among others.
Even the annual blooming of Japan’s famous cherry blossoms (“sakura“) have been affected by climate change. Since cherry trees are only in full bloom for a few weeks out of the year – and tourists from all over the world visit the country specifically for the occasion – first blooms are predicted to the day, well in advance of the blossoming.
This year, cherry blossoms are expected to bloom early yet again, on May 18. Sadly, Mathison (and his camera) are due to depart Haneda airport for NYC on Sunday May 17 and so he will miss the experience.
Fortunately, Magnus brought his brand new Nikon to Tokyo, and will be in town this coming week. So,we look forward to seeing his cherry blossom photos, perhaps even showcasing some in next week’s emailer!
Till then, we hope you enjoy Mathison’s photo at the bottom of the email of a Kawazu-sakura, which were bred in Kawazu prefecture to blossom early. It was only one of three blooming cherry trees in Shiba park, which is located near the grounds of the venue for the conference, the Tokyo Prince Park Tower hotel.
